What is worship like?

Worship That Honors Our Tradition and Speaks to Life Today

Worship at SLS reflects both the richness of our Methodist heritage and our desire to communicate the Gospel in ways that speak to life today. You can expect Scripture, congregational singing, prayer, thoughtful preaching, traditional elements of Christian worship, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Scripture

We believe the Bible is the inspired word of God. This grounds our worship.

Grace

We gather trusting that God's grace is already at work among us.

Response

Worship sends us back into the world to live as disciples of Jesus.

Holy Communion

There Is a Place for You at the Table

Holy Communion is at the heart of our worship at St. Luke-Simpson.

As United Methodists, we believe Communion is more than simply remembering something that happened long ago. It is a means of grace - one of the ways God meets us, strengthens us, forgives us, nourishes us, and continues forming us into the likeness of Jesus Christ.

At the Table, we remember Christ's life, death, and resurrection. We give thanks for what God has done for us, experience Christ's presence among us, and are nourished by God's grace for the life of discipleship. Then we are sent from the Table to become the body of Christ in the world - loving God, loving our neighbors, and serving others in Jesus' name.

Why Do We Celebrate Communion Every Sunday?

From the earliest days of the Church, Christians gathered on the Lord's Day to hear the Word and break bread together. John Wesley encouraged the early Methodists to receive Communion frequently because he believed Christ commanded it and because we continually need the grace God gives through it.

United Methodist worship understands Word and Table as belonging together. We hear the good news of Jesus Christ proclaimed through Scripture and preaching, and then we come to the Table to receive and participate in that same Gospel through bread and cup.

We do not celebrate Communion every week because it becomes less meaningful through repetition. We celebrate it every week because we never stop needing grace.

By celebrating Holy Communion every Sunday, we are intentionally placing Jesus Christ and his grace at the center of everything we are and everything we do.

Who May Receive Communion?

The Table does not belong to St. Luke-Simpson. It belongs to Jesus Christ.

In the United Methodist tradition, Christ invites to his Table all who love him, who earnestly repent of their sin, and who seek to live in peace with one another. You do not have to be a member of St. Luke-Simpson or a United Methodist to receive Communion.

You do not come because you have everything figured out or because you believe you are worthy enough. We come because we need grace.

Christ invites you. There is a place for you at the Table.

What to Expect (Frequently Asked Questions)

Come as you are! You will find people dressed in everything from shorts or jeans to dresses, khakis, slacks, or traditional Sunday best. We are concerned more with welcoming you than with what you have on!

Worship typically lasts right around an hour. Sometimes we go a bit over due to the elements of the order for the day, and sometimes we may get out a little early.

Children are always welcome and encouraged in worship! If a child becomes uncomfortable, we do have a nursery available for babies and younger children. For our older children, we have a children's table available in the back where our Children's Director has activities available!

Our primary entrance is the double glass doors that face Country Club Rd, on the southeast corner of the building. Feel free to park in any open parking spot!

Absolutely! In The United Methodist Church, Holy Communion is Christ's table. You do not have to be a member of St. Luke-Simpson or be a United Methodist to receive Communion. Christ invites to his table all who truly love him, who earnestly repent of their sins, and who seek to live in peace with one another.

Everyone. Period. No exceptions or exclusions! At St. Luke-Simpson, we believe God’s grace is available to all people. Wherever you are in your faith journey, whatever your background, and whether you have been part of a church your whole life or are just beginning to explore faith, you are welcome here. You do not have to have everything figured out. Come as you are. We invite you to worship with us, experience the grace of Jesus, grow as a disciple, and discover the life God is calling you to live.

United Methodists are Christians who believe in the Triune God - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - and in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. We believe the Bible is the primary source for our faith and that salvation is a gift of God’s grace received through faith.

A distinctive part of our Wesleyan tradition is our emphasis on grace: God’s grace is at work in our lives before we are even aware of it, meets us in Jesus Christ, and continues shaping us throughout our lives as we grow in love of God and neighbor.

We believe faith is meant to be lived. Following Jesus leads us toward worship, prayer, discipleship, service, mercy, justice, and love for others.
